Hi crafty friends. It’s Kristine and today I have my first project to share with you using the Amazonia collection by Stamperia. For this project, I will be sharing the process video I made while making a mixed media canvas. As soon as I saw the gorgeous jaguar rice paper in my design team box, I knew a mixed media project was calling my name!
The Amazonia collection is filled with luscious tropical images. The color hues include dark greens, vibrant yellows and reds, and pops of white. For my project, the Collectables pages are ideal in adding layers to my mixed media canvas. Add in some of the wooden butterflies and other wooden images, and a jungle comes to life! However, no mixed media project is complete without a little extra dimension. For my project, I will feature two moulds by Prima. One, although with a steampunk mould, has amazing images that fit well with the Amazon jungle theme. The other mould offers floral and foliage pieces to compliment the images in the Amazonia collection.
Making a Mixed Media Canvas
I want to let you in on a little secret: this is my first ever mixed media canvas! As soon as I saw my design team package, I knew this month would push me outside of my wheelhouse as far as designing. Also, this month’s FotoBella challenge is for mixed media so I have a lot of inspiration. Check out the FotoBella blog post for more details how to enter.
In my mind, I see lots and lots of layers on my canvas. So, to begin, I will start by adding some texture and color using the Amazonia parrot stencil and modeling paste. Once dry, I will add color with some of my distress inks. Then, it’s time to adhere the rice paper to the center of the canvas.
As the ink is drying, I will move on to making layers of foliage using the stencil and texture paste on black cardstock. These images are then fussy cut along with images from the Collectables papers.
Next, it’s time to use the Prima moulds to add dimension to my mixed media canvas. Using soft white clay, I cast my pieces and left them overnight to try. Once set, I will add several layers of color to my pieces. This will include distress sprays, distress paints, and distress inks. After the pieces are dry, I will begin arranging all of the mixed media components around my canvas until I like the look.
Final Touches
To finish off my mixed media canvas, I want to add some extra details. First, I placed several water droplets around the foliage on my canvas using Sparkletz and Glossy Accents. Next, I will fill in some of the open black canvas with micro beads and tinted silicone balls. Finally, to bring the focal point back to the jaguar image on the rice paper, I will use gold sequins and teal micro beads on the eyes to make them pop.
