Altered Glass Decanter made with Prolea Rice Paper

Hello Crafty Friends! It’s ReNae again! When my design team packet this month revealed the Ciao Bella “The Muse” paper collection, I was thrilled! Designing beautiful projects would be easy with all these unique floral papers! Last week I created a beautiful card made with the gorgeous 12 x 12 Prolea flower patterned papers. This week I created a beautiful altered glass decanter using the Ciao Bella Prolea Rice Paper which I am showing you today!

This high quality transparent rice paper features pretty pink protea flowers. It is versatile, strong and durable. This paper can be used on many surfaces, including paper, cardstock, wood, and today’s project, glass! Ciao Bella rice paper is perfect for all decoupage and mixed media projects as you will see!

The Project:

Today’s project is a decorative candle decanter for the bedroom or bathroom.

Altered Glass Decanter Decanter using Prolea Rice Papers

The Supplies Needed for the Prolea Rice Paper Decanter

Before you paint the jar, you will need to apply a primer so the paint sticks to the jar. The Stamperia Primer has a nice creamy texture and works great! You will also need to choose your background color. I selected Prima Marketing Art Alchemy-Liquid Acrylic Paint in Titanium White.

Next, select the Rice Paper. Ciao Bella Prolea Rice Paper is perfect for all decoupage and mixed media projects. As I mentioned above, the transparent rice paper features pretty pink protea flowers. It is easy to adhere to your project and will not disintegrate. No prep is needed! Colors stay bright, and it will not fade or wash off in contact with water. (This was a must, since it is going to sit on the bathroom counter.) Finally, you need glue. To adhere the Ciao Bella Prolea Rice Paper to the jar, I used Stamperia Rice paper glue. This glue is a thin liquid and dries quickly with a satiny sheen.

Making it Prettier

The remaining supplies I used for decorative purposes. I selected Nuvo Expanding Mousse, Barefoot Beach Sparkletz by Buttons Galore & More, and Ranger Liquid Pearls to embellish my altered jar.

The Nuvo Expanding Mousse is perfect for adding unique textured details to your projects. It provides a lustrous shine thanks to the highly-pigmented mica powder. You can use it as a normal embellishment mousse with or without a stencil. If a heat tool is used, the mousse will expand and then dry to bubbling crackle texture.

The Sparkletz by Buttons Galore & More are so versatile! I used them to add sparkle and pizzazz to the jar. They can be used on a card or as shaker bits in a shaker card! To give a 3-D and elegant opalescent look, embellish the Ciao Bella Rice Paper with Liquid Pearls. Dot, draw, outline, color-in, write, glue, border and paint. It can be used as a color wash too and is perfect for holiday and wedding decorating. The squeeze bottle features a fine nib dispenser tip for superior flow control. I used it for adding gold luster to my project.

Creating the Altered Decanter with Prolea Rice Paper

To create the Altered Decanter I selected a candle jar from Christmas that had burned all the way down. The jar was large and cylindrical. After melting the wax from the jar, I washed it in the dishwasher on “hot“ to remove all remaining wax. It was now sparkling clean and ready to alter.

Make sure your jar is clean and dry

The first step was to wipe all the dust from the glass decanter making sure it was clean and free from any debris. I applied one coat of Stamperia primer to the glass jar and allowed it to dry completely. After the primer was completely dry, I applied the Prima Marketing Art Alchemy-Liquid Acrylic Titanium White directly on top of the primer. Using a sponge dauber to apply the paint ensures even coverage. Setting it aside, I allowed it to dry.

Then I began preparing the Ciao Bella Prolea Rice Paper. I prepped the images of flowers I wanted to use by tearing apart sections, drawing around the area with a paintbrush and adding a bit of water, (do not make too wet). I gently tore the images away from the main sheet. Tearing the rice paper is recommended instead of cutting with scissors as the edges can be blended easily into the project.

Applying the Rice Paper glue

I applied the Ciao Bella Rice Paper floral images with Stamperia Rice Paper Glue glue to the glass surface. It was really fun to see this project come to life! It‘s almost like planting a flower garden then watching the flowers bloom!

Icing on the Prolea Rice Paper Cake!

After the Stamperia Rice Paper glue dried completely, I embellished the decanter with the Sparkletz, Nuvo Mousse and Liquid Pearls. Adding these embellishments was like adding icing to a cake! I loved the way it turned out! This project only took about three hours to complete! if you attend this project, please remember to work in a cool dry workspace with plenty of fresh air so that your project dries quickly and evenly!
Please give this project a try using Caio Bella Prolea Rice Paper and some of your leftover candle jars from the holidays! it’s a fun and easy way to make a home decor piece for you or for a friend!
